Due to significant improvement in the quality of synthetic turf improving vastly over the years, its usage has expanded into the realms of landscaping of the commercial as well as residential variety. Initially, artificial grass was generally used as athletic field turf exclusively. This importance given to synthetic turf has come about due to the realization of certain advantages it has to offer – like, for example, the lack of maintenance required, as well as the opportunity to conserve water.
Artificial turf is used in a variety of ways at airports, and tends to be very useful. Synthetic turf is naturally not a way to attract animals of any sort – there's no food or shelter, and therefore lessens the chances of any stray creatures wandering into airplane lines. It also serves to be a solid, reliable surface upon which vehicles can be directed and driven safely and quickly, in case of an emergency.
Baseball turf is generally considered to astro turf, and is widely used in baseball fields. When it initially began to be used, it was limited in amount, and so only parts of the field could be covered in it. In this case, the ball bounced better on fake grass than it did on an actual grass field, and even moved faster, which allowed players to play with more reaction time available to them. Synthetic grass is used for hitting mats and batting cage turf as well.
Soccer clubs weren't very lucky with the synthetic turf. The astro turf used in the initial stages was very damaging – it was a hard surface and led to injuries and generally unbearable matches. Eventually the soccer turf was reverted to a real grass field but recent tests and developments show a move towards artificial turf again.
This sport is the one that has been by far the most affected by the change in field turf
– it changed the design of the hockey stick and allowed new techniques to be evolved. However, the artificial grass used is comparatively different to other general fake turf.
American Football has had a rocky relationship with field turf as well. While some stadiums chose to convert to astro turf, a lot of others were against the idea in the past. Some stadiums continue to be grass fields, while others have moved on to new generation artificial grass. Currently all stadiums in Canada are possessors of synthetic turf, due to the constant cold weather there.
Synthetic grass in golf is used for courts, whether indoor or outdoor. A putting green turf, small in size, is used for homes and offices as well.
Using a fake turf around the swimming pool instead of actual grass can prove to be quite advantageous, as the water from the swimming pool will not combine with the dirt to create a mess, and using it in the place of tiles also prevents the risk of anyone slipping.
Fake grass also adds to the aesthetic quality to a rooftop garden, filling in the space quite pleasantly. It makes management easier, and provides a visually appealing atmosphere as well, without having to worry about anything like grass cuttings.
