Why Artificial Lawn Grass is Ideal for Sports

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Sep 13, 2012

One of the least known facts on artificial grass is that it was designed mainly for sports pitches. Named Astro Turf at the time, this fake grass became popular with major sports clubs, especially during their training pitches. If you’re wondering how different sports benefit from this innovative form of grass, read on.

Soccer Turf
Soccer turf is most in demand across the world because international institutes such as FIFA and UEFA support it. In fact, both of these organizations have come up with their own standards and test methods to help develop the artificial lawn industry. These initiatives have been inspired by the advantages field turf provides players, including:

  • Lower Costs and Upkeep – Artificial grass doesn’t require mowing or frequent repainting of lines. In addition, it won’t develop ruts, holes or bumps like natural lawns, making it more cost effective.

  • Uninterrupted Playing Time – Arena football turf allows matches to go on in most weather types except thunder and lightning. Even rain won’t affect players because fake grass won’t turn slippery.

  • Wider Choice of Footwear – Soccer players can enjoy the flexibility of choosing their footwear, be it indoor soccer shoes or outdoor soccer cleats.

  • Smoother Games – Fake grass is smoother than its natural counterpart. This makes passing the ball and running on the field turf easy and free from resistance.

Baseball Turf
The first time artificial grass was used for baseball was in the Houston Astrodome in 1966. Since then, Astra Turf gained a lot of acclaim and became used in different baseball stadiums across the U.S. The reasons behind its popularity are the same as soccer turf’s, but there are a few additions such as:

  • Bouncier and Faster Baseballs - Putting green turf allows baseballs to travel faster. This provides fielders with more time to react since they can play further back than they did before. Baseball turf also allows the ball to bounce higher, therefore fielders can bounce the ball back in front of the players they throw the ball to.

  • Safety for Players – Baseball players can slide or run without worrying about injuries. In addition, artificial grass offers a bounce that protects players’ knees and ankles from long-term injuries.

Baseball field turf can also be used in batting cages during training sessions. In fact, batting cage turf is highly recommended for those who are still learning how to play.

Golf Turf
One of the popular sports which require extensive green spaces is golf. Artificial golf turf can be used indoors, outdoors and even in your backyard. This is because it provides all the advantages mentioned earlier as well as:

  • UV Stability – Because synthetic grass is designed with durability in mind, manufacturers made sure that it remains resistant to UV rays. This means that you will get the best value for your money.

  • Low Maintenance – Players won’t have to worry while driving and putting because the grass is smooth, dry and perfectly manicured all year long. This means that you can enjoy your game and even win points.

Astro Turf is also great for tennis, field hockey, football, rugby, lacrosse and lawn bowling. So, make sure to choose this surface over natural grass to enjoy your sport to the max.
