FAQS About Artificial Grass

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Oct 12, 2012

If you are thinking about having an artificial lawn installed at your home your head is probably buzzing with questions. There are plenty of details surrounding the synthetic turf buying, installing and maintaining process; reading through some FAQs about artificial grass might clear the air up quite a bit.

Which areas can synthetic grass be installed in?

In addition to areas where real grass is able to grow, synthetic lawn grass can also be installed in places where it was impossible to grow natural grass such as on decks and patios. This is because for an area to be good for synthetic turn installation it only needs to be a nicely leveled surface with a base which will allow water to soak through to the ground through pores on the underside of the fake grass.

What anchors the fake grass in place?

Although it is true that the weight of the synthetic lawn grass itself is sufficient to keep it in place, some infilling is needed to ensure the individual fibers stay up and do not matt. The infill will also help to anchor the grass down and prevent it from bending, wrinkling or moving out of place. A mix of rubber and sand infill is recommended.

How does the expense of real grass installation compare to installation of a synthetic turf?

Installing an artificial turf essentially means you will no longer have to worry about lawn mowing, watering, fertilizing, edging, weeding or the spraying of pesticides because synthetic lawns stay look green and clean without all of these. Installation of artificial grass cuts down the costs for a lawn mower, water sprinklers, fertilizer bags, toxic pesticides and other gardening tools.

Is it still easy to keep an artificial turf clean if I have pets?

Keeping an artificial turf clean is easier than keeping real grass clean, even if you have pets. A leaf blower or regular rake can be used to easily clean fallen leaves. As is done on real grass lawns, on artificial grass lawns animal feces will need to be scooped up and the area will need to be washed properly with water. You could use a garden hose for this purpose. Pet urine does soak through to the ground like water but if you live in a particularly dry area it is advised you hose the synthetic turf down with a garden hose once in a while to keep it especially clean.

Is it ok to walk on fake grass and for children to play on it?

Yes, most definitely. One of the best things about having an artificial turf installed at your home is that while you have significantly cut down on lawn maintenance costs and found another way to go green and preserve the environment but cutting down the use of fertilizers and pesticides; you can still enjoy the lawn as much as you would a real grass lawn. This being said, children should always be under supervision while playing outside to ensure safety.
