How To Keep Artificial Grass Healthy

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Nov 23, 2012

Artificial grass is easier to install as the job is simple enough that you may not need to hire external help. Although fake grass does not wilt like its natural counterpart, you still need to be vigilant with maintenance. The lines below will give you an idea on how to keep artificial turf green and healthy.

Understand the Type

First thing you need to do is to understand the type of fake grass installed in your lawn. Some varieties of artificial grass need extensive care. Others need only partial maintenance and can stay healthy even if you forget to water them. You need to find out the variety of fake grass installed in your lawn if it came with the package. The previous homeowner will be the best person to answer this question. You can also ask the realtor about it. You will already be aware of the type of fake turf if you were the one who did the installation.

Water Your Fake Grass

A fake grass that requires regular watering is still better than natural grass. The watering regimen is not as strict as you can hose down the lawn once or twice a week. It is important to water the lawn as otherwise the fake turf may become excessively dry. Watering the fake grass will keep the fibers soft and shiny thus prolonging the life of the grass. You can use a standard lawn hose or sprinklers for this purpose. Watering is also required to keep the gravel base in shape. The gravel may otherwise get loose, creating raised portions in the lawn.

Some varieties of artificial turf need even less water. Manufacturers give specific instructions on how to examine the fake grass and look at its shape and color. You will only need to water the grass during summers in some cases.

Apply Pesticides

You may need minor application of pesticides for the fake grass. While artificial turf will not be eaten away by pests, they still find refuge in between the layers of grass. Manufacturers usually recommend applying pesticides once a month or as per the conditions of the grass. You can avoid the application if there is no evidence of infestation.

Use a Leveler

The simplest maintenance you can do on your fake turf is to use a standard leveler. This will keep the fake grass in shape and remove any uneven surfaces. Unlike natural grass, where you need regular mowing and leveling, fake grass has minimal requirements. You can use a leveler after hosing down the grass. You can also use it when you feel that depressions or raised surfaces have appeared on the turf. There is otherwise no need of daily or weekly leveling of the grass. A mower is not required for fake turf in the first place as the grass does not grow.

Artificial turf is easier to maintain and does not come with the inherent problems of natural grass. With simple maintenance, you can ensure that the artificial grass in your lawn stay in the same position as it was the first day after installation.
