Why Install Artificial Grass in Batting Cages?

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Mar 20, 2013

Batting cage turf has become synonymous with synthetic varieties. You will find it difficult to find contemporary practice areas today that still use natural grass. This is particularly true of professional baseball arenas as players like to practice on the same surface as they find on the actual fields. The growing popularity of fake turf has caused thousands of baseball fields to rethink their options and replace them with artificial grass. You can follow suit and see visual and practical benefits including monetary saving. The lines below will shed more light on the procedure.

Why Natural Grass is no longer Good?
Natural grass is falling out of favor due to a variety of reasons. Batting cage turf has certain requirements that only the synthetic varieties can fulfill. The first problem associated with natural grass is the installation. You cannot install the grass on any surface as you need to prepare the ground first. This involves the removal of existing shrubbery and adding fertilizer and mulch to provide a strong base to the grass. The next step is that of planting the grass and it involves a skillful job so as no fiber is  ruined. Then you will need constant care and maintenance to keep the grass green and healthy.

There is even more maintenance in case you have installed natural grass in batting cages. You will need to keep the grass uniformly cut so as to provide a stable platform to the players. A minor bump or depression in the grass will put things in jeopardy as players will find it hard to practice their skills. Impediments are never appreciated in professional sports as they can wreak havoc with playing conditions.

Advantages of Fake Turf
Compare this to the performance of artificial turf. This type of batting cage turf will provide you with stable and consistent performance. First things first, the installation of artificial turf is a breeze. You do not need to provide layers of mulch and fertilizer as you do with natural grass. All you need is a base layer of gravel to provide a stable surface to synthetic grass. Another thing required is a drainage passage that will keep the grass dry.

The most visible advantage of batting cage turf is that it can help players in improving their game. A standard installation will not have any bumps or depressions and will resemble a lush green and smooth surface. This green and flat expanse of fake grass will provide ideal playing conditions. Baseball players will be able to improve their pitching and hitting skills on this surface.

It is the satisfaction of the players that is of prime importance for any facility manager. Simple maintenance that only involves the removal of debris and frequent watering will make things easier for you. Add to this the long life of the turf that will bring monetary savings.

It is thus a good idea to plan installing a synthetic batting cage turf. You may have to spend a little more in the start but the investment will pay off in the long run.
