The Perfect Material for Hitting Mats

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Mar 28, 2013

Hitting mats are a ubiquitous part of any golf course. These mats play a crucial role in allowing the golfers to perfect their pitch, swing and strokes. The mat has become an integral part of golfing in recent years. It comprises of a rectangular piece of artificial turf that is attached to a hard surface such as wood or plastic. The dimensions are usually three foot by five foot and the mat is usually six inches thick.

The main purpose of the hitting mat is to provide a stable surface for the golfer to perfect his or her game. The mat comes equipped with putting green turf that holds the same varieties as you will find in its real counterpart. Main features of the hitting mats are listed below.

Construction
Hitting mats are almost always made from synthetic grass. This variety resembles the natural grass that you find in golf courses except for the fact that it is stronger. Fake grass can easily withstand the weight of the standing person and does not come undone from its location in the mat. The smooth and thick cover of artificial grass provides a level playing surface that you can use for perfecting your skills.

There are, however, a few things you need to be examine. A closer look at the construction of the mat is worth your time. You will find that the fake grass has been attached to a base layer of a sturdy fabric that is then attached to the wooden or plastic frame. This intermediary layer acts as the foundation of the artificial turf, transferring the weight to the wooden frame in equal proportions. This, however, does not impact the weight as the entire contraption can easily be carried around by the golfer. Hiring the help of a caddie will not hurt either.

Where to Practice
There is a confusion among golfers on where to practice their skills. The problem largely arises because of the lack of a standard playing surface that could emulate the features of a golf course. One does not always live closer to a course but still needs to practice one's skills. This is where the hitting mats come into play and enable golfers to practice their skills virtually everywhere. You can also use the mat indoors for those short pitching and putting practice. This will come in handy before a match in the golf course where you can practice in the players lounge or other places.

The best location of hitting mats is outdoors where you can use the natural expanse to hone your golfing skills. Place the mat at a plain surface and try hitting the ball at different angles. The smooth texture of the fake turf will keep your feet steady whereas the outdoors will provide excellent ground for perfecting long puts.

Hitting mats have become a must-have item for golfers. The use of fake turf and sturdier construction means that you can use the mat for months and years without any major repairs.
