Artificial Turf for Tennis

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Mar 07, 2012

Tennis is a widely played sport that is getting increasing recognition due to its commercial value. It is popularly known as the gentleman’s game, and is held in high regard among major league sports such as baseball and soccer. However, there is one thing that distinguishes all these sports, the artificial turf they are played on. Synthetic grass is used in playing fields across the globe in place of real grass due to its longevity and low cost of maintenance.

You may have seen on television how tennis is played on different colored courts. Those are actually different types of tennis courts it can be played on. Such surfaces are made of clay or grass and some are just hard to facilitate the ball’s bounce during a match. In the past, players used to play on grass surfaces which needed to be constantly maintained, mowed and watered to retain their lush look and feel. Not only was it time consuming, but taking care of such turf was extremely expensive as well.

It was later that sports managers discovered artificial grass lawns and adopted them as the ideal solution for their money problems. Plus, they also discovered that they could save a lot of water by installing artificial grass in place of a natural lawn. Additionally, synthetic grass does not require mowing in the slightest since it cannot grow.

All it needs is a regular brush down to keep its blades in an upright position. Incidentally, artificial turf also needs to be swept clear of soil and debris for it to retain its verdant look for extended periods of time. Parking cars near it should also be avoided since the hot exhaust gases can damage the surface irreparably.

Every professional athlete knows that tennis shoes need to be protected from regular wear and tear if they expect to perform at their best during a match. This means keeping the soles protected from excess soil and debris on the court. An artificial lawn takes care of them quite admirably in this regard.

Not only does the shoe remain free of grass stains, but it will last a lot longer as well. Plus, since artificial lawns have the ability to dry faster than ordinary lawns, the shoes will retain their shape and performance for a long time to come.

Hard courts are usually preferred by tennis players due to their resilient surfaces and their unique feel compared to other types. Additionally, the ball can also be shot with pinpoint accuracy using the clear bounce such courts are famous for providing as compared to other surfaces. This is also why more and more sports agencies are installing fake turf.

Not only does it emulate the hard surface accurately, but it can also be customized according to the size and shape of the play area. Plus, artificial grass provides predictable bounce to the ball enabling players to gauge reaction time, roll, etc. In other words, playing on Astroturf enables players to remain at the height of their game no matter how tense the situation gets on the field.
