Installing Rubber Acoustic Underlayment

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Apr 28, 2023

Rubber Underlayment Installation Overview

Installing rubber flooring underlayment is a straightforward process that requires some preparation and attention to detail. Here is a guide to help you install your underlayment like a pro:

Step 1: Prepare the subfloor Before installing the underlayment, you'll need to make sure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. If there are any cracks or bumps, fill them with a self-leveling compound or patching material. This will ensure that the underlayment and flooring will lay flat and prevent any damage to the flooring later on.

Step 2: The rubber flooring underlayment must be glued down with a moisture cured urethane adhesive that includes a vapor barrier. Ideally; you would test the base for levels of vapor drive and choose an adhesive with a minimum of 3lbs vapor drive barrier.  High moisture areas/sub-bases may require up to a 20lbs+ vapor drive barrier rated adhesive.

This helps prevent moisture from seeping through the subfloor and into the flooring. Follow the adhesive spread rates and moisture barrier level guidelines; instructions carefully and make sure to apply the adhesive evenly over the entire subfloor.

Step 3: Roll out and trim in the rubber flooring acoustic underlayment over the subfloor. Make sure to cut the underlayment to fit around any obstacles or edges. Butt the seams together tightly and glue down.

Step 4: Install the final hardwood, vinyl or plank flooring on top of the underlayment.
Depending on the type of flooring and desired performance characteristics you are installing, another layer of adhesive may be necessary on top of the underlayment.

Step 5: Complete final steps and install edges and baseboards.

Athletic Textiles can supply you with your acoustic underlayment and sound reduction flooring solutions quickly and affordably!
