Golden Tips for Buying the Perfect Artificial Lawn

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Sep 10, 2012

Astro turf, or artificial grass, is generating a buzz in the landscaping scene. Not only does it provide homeowners with a perfect lawn all year round, but it also saves them from spending thousands of dollars on landscaping efforts and maintenance. If you have given putting green turf enough thought, you may be tempted to get it from the nearest store or company. However, to get the best value for your money, consider the following important tips.
  • Before you head down to the store, measure the area you intend to cover with artificial turf. This is important because most fake grass producers sell their products by the square footage of the area. Besides, size can determine whether you should go for artificial grass rolls or tiles. Rolls are best for large areas such as your backyard while tiles are more convenient for smaller spaces like batting cages.

  • Assess how much traffic your fake grass areas will receive. Though artificial lawns are designed with durability in mind, walking over them continuously can flatten the grass blades. In this case, consider adding a few wooden or gravel paths as well.

  • Do a little comparison shopping before purchasing synthetic grass. However, keep in mind that your fake lawn will be relatively expensive at first because of infill, glue, soil stabilizers and other necessities. So, if you find cheap field turf, make sure to ask about what you’re compromising on.

  • Synthetic turf comes in different styles and can serve different purposes. So, make sure to choose the best artificial lawn grass for the application you need. For example, choose baseball turf or soccer turf if you intend to turn your backyard into a sports lover’s paradise.

  • Some top fake turf sellers and manufacturers offer samples to their clients. You may want to take a look at some in order to decide which surfaces are best for your needs.

  • You may be tempted to show off your green thumb by going for a do-it-yourself kit. However, because putting green turf can become complicated and more costly if handled the wrong way, you may be better off with professional help. Some landscapers offer synthetic grass and its installation for a reasonable price package, so do consider this option.

  • One of the expenses of fake grass is infill, which is small pieces of rubber or sand that act like real soil. You can choose to forgo it, but it can be necessary if you’re using your artificial lawn for sports because infill cushions every step you take and secures the turf.

  • A warranty may be offered on fake grass products. However, in most cases it is likely to cover fading and stains. Therefore, always check what the warranty you’re getting entails.

  • Find out about how you should maintain your fake lawn. This means that you should ask the manufacturer or seller whether a simple wash will be sufficient or if a special detergent for the artificial grass blades will be required.

With the help of these tips, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of synthetic grass and get the best value for your investment.
