Ideal Field Turf For Football Arenas

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Nov 21, 2012

Football arenas are turning to artificial turf to overcome problems associated with natural grass. It does not matter if the arena is used by football, soccer or rugby. Fake turf removes the hassles that come as a package deal in arenas that have installed natural grass.

Apart from the regular replacement of saplings, these facilities also have to comply with the regulations that dictate the size, shape and performance of the turf. While natural grass can meet the ground turf standards as set by different sporting regulators, it takes a financial toll on the field managers.

You need to spend heavily on maintenance and planting of new species of grass in order to keep the arena in a playable condition. The tips listed below will help you in identifying the best field turf for your football arena.

Listen to the Regulators

The first thing you need to do is to go through the manuals sent by regulators of football. These manuals list a number of specifications that field managers need to follow while installing real or synthetic turf. Although the restrictions are not as strict, you still need to comply with some of them. The length of the grass, for example, does not have to be high enough to impede the movement of the players. While you can always mow down the ordinary grass, fake turf makes the job easier. It comes at your specified length and thickness and does not grow. You can thus follow the specifications as dictated by the local and national football bodies.

Maintenance Costs

Nothing is more cumbersome for football field managers than spending heavily on turf maintenance. The costs may run high if you have planted natural grass. Apart from the mowing, you need to replace the grass every few weeks as it tends to wilt and die. You may need to hire a team of professionals to do this job. The expenditure is significant when all costs are added up.

This is not true of arena football turf made from synthetic materials. The synthetic turf does not need mowing or replacement. You only need a one-time installation and there are enough varieties of fake turf available that you can choose one that best meets the specifications for football games. The only maintenance costs will be related to hosing down of the artificial turf, which is less frequent than one required for grass. You will also need to remove debris from the fake turf and ensure that it keeps a smooth texture.

You can use the same field turf for football arenas for many seasons. The best part about synthetic turf is that you can remove parts of it while keeping the others intact. This will make the job cost-effective and reduce the hassles involved in replacing the entire turf.

Synthetic turf emerges as the ideal option for football arenas as well as other sports facilities. It can be installed in the main arena and practice fields and will provide a smooth and firm playing surface for football players.
