Baseball Field Turf – How to Do it Right?

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Apr 01, 2013

It is a tough job to install baseball field turf. It is considered a difficult job as baseball fields are expansive locations that require very specific varieties of grass. You need to be cautious about installing a specific variety of grass in the field. This caution should lead to a preference for artificial turf as it will remove the hassles of replacing natural grass after every match. The lines below will give you an idea on how to choose baseball field turf.

Size
First thing to measure is the size of the baseball field. Do you manage a full-fledged baseball field that conforms to the international standards? If yes, then you will need an elaborate arrangement where every inch  needs to be measured. The accurate dimensions of the baseball field will come in handy to provide you with an estimate of the expected spending.

Selection of Turf
What type of turf you want to install in the baseball field? First things first, the natural grass should be removed from the list as you will end up spending more on maintenance and replacement than the actual installation. It is better to go with artificial grass as it will be an economically wise decision in the long run. Fake grass also stays longer than natural grass and requires little maintenance.

While on the search for artificial turf, you need to keep certain things in mind. Fake grass comes in many shapes and dimensions with varying types of construction. Some grasses are not as thick as others while some varieties need more watering. A soft yet sturdy variety of synthetic turf is better suited for baseball fields as it can easily withstand the pressure of plays and stay put at its place. It also requires less watering and is good for areas that receive little rainfall and have higher temperatures.

Budget
The next step is that of budgeting the installation costs of synthetic turf. It is highly likely that you prefer a variety of artificial turf that is best suited for your facility. It, however, comes at a price that you cannot afford. You will need to tone down your choices in order to settle for a grass that is not only soft and stable but is also affordable. You can avoid overspending on the installation by budgeting the entire process. This should ideally include everything from the removal of the existing grass to the installation of the last piece of synthetic turf and use of heavy rollers to keep it in place. Installation costs should also include the money you can dole out to the installers as doing the job yourselves may not yield the same results.

Baseball field turf installation should not take more than a few days under ideal conditions. Budgeting is of utmost importance as is the selection of a variety that lasts longer and requires little maintenance. This calls for spending some time in the planning phase as it will enable you to avoid botched installation and associated problems.
