Commonly Asked Questions about Artificial Lawn Grass

Posted by Matt Garrabrants on Oct 22, 2012

I don’t want the lawn to look fake. Will the artificial lawn grass look real?

Yes it will look real. This is the great thing about fake grass, it looks and feels just like actual natural grass while saving you a considerable amount of time and money with its low maintenance advantages.

How long will the synthetic turf last? Should I expect it to fade after some time?

As is the case with when making any investment, it is a good idea to conduct a comparative survey of different suppliers of synthetic grass. All good suppliers will give you a warranty with the grass sections that promises the synthetic turf will be able to withstand fading, sun exposure and excessive wear.

What will happen to the synthetic grass when it snows or rains?

The water will simply soak through to the ground. This is because when artificial grass is being manufactured, a pore or small hole is made in each fiber. The purpose of this pore is to allow drainage of water normally into the ground. Also, the rubber or sand infill that you will have laid over the artificial turf to keep it in place will help to absorb the water from rain and snowfalls until it soaks through to the ground. Heavy rains are also not something you need to worry about if you have a synthetic turf installed; as would be the case with natural lawns, the excess water will simply run off the surface of the synthetic lawn.

Do I need to be worried about bug infestation?

Because synthetic grass does not offer bugs any nutritional substances, insects stay well away from synthetic grass simply because it holds nothing that would attract them. Furthermore, bugs have a tough time getting through the rubber backing.

Is synthetic grass susceptible to mold and it is flammable?

As a general rule, synthetic grass is much less susceptible to the growth of molds than real grass. Also, artificial turf is much less flammable than real live grass and many more times less flammable than real dead grass. To keep your synthetic lawn clean of molds all you need to do is ensure you properly drain it because molds grow wherever a pool of standing water is present. Synthetic grass is less flammable as compared to natural grass because the rubber and sand infill prevents fire from spreading and even put flames out

Which type of base will work well?

There are a number of good bases that you can choose from; a hard base that would work well could be made of asphalt, concrete or tarmac and it is better if the base has pores in it. It should be kept in mind that if you are working with a concrete base you will have to be cautious about the edges of slabs not showing after the artificial turf has been laid down. For the concrete not to show through sand can be poured over the concrete or a shock pad made of rubber could be installed between the layer of fake grass and concrete.
